Neoventus Design Group, LLC

The Company

Advanced Fusion Technologies is a product-oriented engineering design and services company, serving the U.S. military market by providing open architecture solutions for legacy systems. Located on Kauai, Hawaii with marketing offices in Northern Virginia, Advanced Fusion Technologies was awarded grants from the Hawaii Technology Development Venture (HTDV) in both 2006 and 2007.

The Need

AFT was awarded a contract to develop a system based on open interfaces and commercial standards to provide conversion between legacy interfaces (MIL-STD-1553, NTDS) and network-based protocols and topologies (UDP/TCP/IP/Ethernet).  Central to AFT’s concept is a system controller (SC) as a standard 3U Compact PCI module consuming a single slot.  The SC is based on a Virtex-5 FPGA with a MicroBlaze core and two embedded tri-mode media access controllers (MAC).  Unique mechanical and interface support requirements rendered COTS solutions unviable.  With core competencies in systems engineering and software development, AFT sought a hardware development partner to round out its project team.  AFT needed an experienced company to work closely with their technical group to provide board and FPGA designs that would meet project goals.

Our Role

Neoventus engaged with AFT engineers early in the project life cycle to help identify an optimized architecture to meet system goals, sundry requirements, and mechanical constraints.  Neoventus handled or oversaw all phases of board development including design entry, layout, PCB fabrication, parts procurement, assembly, test, and integration.  Neoventus also designed the FPGA logic based on a MicroBlaze soft core and a host of peripherals including DDR2 memory, PCI bus, Tri-mode MACs, serial busses and general purpose I/O.
